Business Train-the-Trainer Institute

Organizations are invited to apply for the Business Train-the-Trainer Institute! Applications due April 10. 

All Our Kin is a nationally recognized non-profit which trains, supports and sustains family child care providers to ensure that children and families have the foundation they need to succeed in school and in life. We have a 20-year track record of increasing the supply and sustainability of quality child care through our innovative business supports, which help providers grow their professional skills, increase their earnings, and improve their quality of life.

Our mission is to support the success of every family child care provider, which is why we are offering a new 5-day Train-the-Trainer Institute to equip trainers from across the country to lead our Family Child Care Business Series. Our comprehensive 10-week series, based on the principles of adult learning theory and designed specifically for family child care, covers everything from contracts and policies to financial management. All Our Kin will offer virtual support, curriculum materials, and a detailed training guide to trainers as they implement this series in their communities after the Institute.

What is the Family Child Care Business Series?

All Our Kin developed a 10-week, 30-hour business series over the past decade, as we heard directly from family child care providers about what business topics are most important to them. The series serves as introduction to marketing, contracts, policies, professional communication with clients, risk management, insurance, recordkeeping, the Time-Space Percentage, budgeting, and savings. The series is activity-based, hands-on, and accessible to learners at all levels. It is designed to encourage relationship-building between participants so that they can support one another moving forward.

What can participants expect in the Business Train-the-Trainer Institute?

The Business Train-the-Trainer Institute will orient trainers to the content and style of the Family Child Care Business Series so that they can go on to teach it in their communities. All Our Kin mentor trainers will present sections of the Business Series to model the activities and teach the content. They will pause and reflect often, pulling back the curtain to give trainers all the tips and best practices that they know. The Institute is designed to be engaging and fun, and is flexible to meet the needs of all participants.

What follow up support will participants receive?

When participants in the Business Train-the-Trainer Institute go on to teach the Family Child Care Business Series in their home communities, they will receive the following supports:

  • A detailed curriculum for each of the 10 classes with trainer notes and suggestions.

  • A curriculum box with props for activities in the series (i.e. tape measure, playing cards).

  • 10 “refresher” videos that review each of the classes, including how to run activities, tips for success, and common challenges to be aware of.

  • Access to an All Our Kin mentor trainer to ask questions, troubleshoot, and get support.

Who should apply for the Institute?

The Institute is best suited for trainers at organizations that have direct contact with family child care providers, which can include staffed family child care networks, associations, Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies, nonprofit organizations, or child care unions. Participants should have a passion for supporting family child care providers, a commitment to equity for all caregivers, and dedicated work time and resources to implement the Business Series after the Institute. They do not need to have extensive business knowledge, though they should be comfortable with basic math. We are especially seeking bilingual applicants who can offer the Business Series in Spanish in their home communities. The ideal number of participants who should apply per organization is 2-3, though we will consider up to a maximum of 4.

When and where is the Institute?

We are proud to welcome Institute participants to our hometown of New Haven, Connecticut. The Business Institute will take place June 22–June 26, 2020. If we are not able to host on these dates because of COVID-19, we will reschedule for later in the year. What will the Institute cost?

The fee for the Institute is $2500 per participant for 5 days of training and follow up support. We are offering full and partial scholarships to cover the participation fee. However, neither the fee nor scholarships cover travel or accommodations in New Haven. Please contact us if you have financial concerns at technicalassistance@allourkin.org 

How will the application process work?

Applications for All Our Kin’s Business Institute will be open from March 16, 2020 through April 10, 2020 at 6pm PST/9pm EST. We may extend the application period due to COVID-19, if necessary. We are choosing participants based on the criteria above (see “Who should apply for the Institute?”) as well as geographic and linguistic diversity. After you submit an application, you may hear from us for a 30-minute follow up call to learn more about your organization and your interest in the Institute. We will notify participants of their acceptance by May 1, 2020.
